Startup Weekend Hartford: HEALTH Launches New Entrepreneurial Teams
Over this last weekend, health and wellness-minded entrepreneurs, engineers, and developers came together as part of Startup Weekend Hartford 2012, Hartford’s second annual Startup Weekend. The event returned to the Hartford Public Library this year with a special focus on health and wellness, but the same intense schedule as last year. Entrepreneurs pitched ideas Friday night, teams formed around the top ideas, and by Sunday the teams were presenting their products to a panel of healthcare-focused judges.
Hartford is only the second city globally to have put on a Startup Weekend HEALTH, so this was a ground-breaking event in many ways. The pay-off for all the hard work of the volunteer team of Organizers, Coaches, Volunteers, and Judges was clear on Sunday, aka “Presentation Day.” Eight teams emerged over the weekend, and delivered excellent presentations:
- Consider Eats
- Clinic OnDemand
- eGency
- Farmer’s Garden
- Haptologics
- Movid
- Stand4Health.me
While everyone put forth amazing effort and gained some incredible experience over the course of the weekend, the judges were tasked with picking winners. The winning teams were Movid led by John Farrell (1st Place and People’s Choice), eGency led by R.C. Thornton (2nd Place), and Farmer’s Garden led by Maureen Farmer (reSET Social Enterprise Award).
The event was another great example of what our Connecticut entrepreneurial community can do when it works together. John Shemo and his organizing team did an excellent job; coaches, judges, sponsors, and volunteers also gave generously of their time and resources.
In October, a follow up event called “SW Next” will be held in Stamford – look for more details here soon. And in November, New Haven will hold its second annual Startup Weekend. Registration opens this week at newhaven.startupweekend.org.
Congratulations to the Startup Weekend Hartford organizing team, and all the startup teams, especially Movid, eGency, and Farmer’s Garden. Great work, Hartford!
